Schenectady is a funny city in that one street may be beautiful and safe and then you go one street over and it's terrible. So don't be disheartened if you come across a bad street or neighborhood. Just keep going and you'll find the beautiful old neighborhoods and parks. There's a lot of history so just be open minded and you will find it.

You have to deal with a lot of snow in the winter. If you drive a car, snow tires are a must. Better yet, just own an SUV and you don't have to deal with swapping out your tires twice a year. Make sure you have a good heater, and remote start. On really cold mornings you can start your car without leaving your house, and when you are ready to leave the car is nice and toasty.

There are a lot of amazing old buildings to see in Schenectady because this is one of the oldest cities in the US, but one of the highlights is the GE factory. It's especially glorious at night. One of the highways takes you at eye level of the famous light-up GE sign. At night it is so beautiful to see the sign lit up and drive right past it. You feel like you are among history and think back to the times of Edison inventing the light bulb. GE used to light the world and the sign is a reminder of how great the city used to be.

Union Street. Union Street is a historical street in Schenectady. Lower Union is part of Downtown. There are a lot of restaurants and other businesses along that stretch. As you drive from Lower Union to Upper Union there are beautiful mansions that used to be hugs single-family homes. Now most are partitioned into apartments but the homes are still amazing. Upper Union has undergone revitalization and there are a lot of shops, restaurants and salons.

Use your blinkers.

Favorite memory of driving in this city was on a summer night. Me and the boys went to a nice local bar but we took the long way there. They had just refreshed how the city looked so it looks a lot nicer now than it used to do. Imagine four guys in the car with the windows down, some CCR blasting and looking at the town knowing it was ours.

State Street. They just re-did the city so now the street has an amazing view and they really cleaned up the area. You can see all the nice parts and it really makes you feel happy.
