Comfortable, modern, and smooth drive
The vehicle performs well, but it has given me a few problems. Once it stopped in the middle of the road for no discernible reason. After a few minutes of trying to re-start, it finally did. I took it back to the dealer, where comprehensive diagnostic tests were done, and no problems were found -- I'm just left hoping it doesn't happen again. There have also been problems with Bluetooth. When I'm on my phone, sometimes I will cut out and the person on the other end can't hear me. This started up after I owned the car for about a year, so I assumed it was a problem with my relatively newer phone, but after getting the phone replaced, the problem persisted (although it generally resolves itself quickly and doesn't happen too frequently). The car also accelerates noticeably louder than I think it should. Those are the biggest cons. As for pros, it is a strong, safe vehicle; it has lots of trunk space; shock-absorbency is great; it is comfortable, and it is overall very reliable. Fuel efficiency seems to be pretty good (although not as good as my previous car, which was not a VW). Another con is the price; however, I believe that you pay what you get for, and I think that (for the most part) I did.

Mostly competent.
This car was purchased used with 170k miles on it as an interim car (that became permanent), so take that into account. Despite some initial problems, the car has been relatively reliable for its age. I've been driving it for almost three years. Comfort, performance, and mileage are acceptable. Maintenance has been a little above average, with electronic problems (some unresolved) at the top of the list. Slightly roomier than the average compact car. Most controls still work, some hard-to access lights have failed and the glove compartment and center console are cheap junk. For self-maintainers, the engine is relatively easy to access and well-designed (1.8L Turbo). Roomy trunk with little facility for tying down objects. Replacement mirror controls blow a fusible link behind the fuse box that is a pain to deal with. Have no control over electric mirrors. The wiring harness has a flaw that means that if you have an aftermarket stereo, most smog shops will refuse to smog your car. Front bumper cover is weak and connection points tend to break. Sunroof tends to open by itself when driving or parked (venting not fully open). After several electrical problems that rendered the vehicle immobile in the first four months, the car has not had a similar problem (except failed coil packs, which admittedly seemed to be original). I got it because it was (seemingly) cheap and had a manual transmission. The all-black interior makes it hard to find things sometimes (it's really, *really* dark in there, it feels like driving a coffin sometimes). Traction a little imperfect but handling is entirely competent for a basic car.

They actually sold me the car for the price they advertised. That's about it, it took really long, they did have good service, they made me feel like I was buying a BMW or an expensive vehicle with the way they treated me. I asked for a Volkswagen sweater and they gave me one.
