2024 Ford Mustang GT Review

By Shawn Furman | June 24, 2024

Vehicle Type: The 2024 Ford Mustang GT is a high-performance two-door sports car available in either fastback coupe or a convertible body styles

Price Range: The least expensive Ford Mustang GT Coupe costs $43,305 after the destination fee is added. The range-topping Ford Mustang Dark Horse Premium Coupe starts at $61,080, but that price can rise to over $80,000 with options.

Underneath the least expensive Mustang GT in the lineup sits the Ford Mustang EcoBoost. It starts at $32,515 including destination fee. The priciest Ford Mustang EcoBoost Premium Convertible model starts at $38,040. EcoBoost models can rise to well over $50,000 after options are added.

Powertrain: The 2024 model comes with several different powertrain options. Each Mustang GT model comes with the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine. It produces 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque with a standard six-speed transmission sending power to the rear wheels. A 10-speed automatic transmission is optional.

Dark Horse models utilize the same Coyote V8 engine from the GT model, but upgraded to produce 500 horsepower and 418 lb-feet of torque. Its standard six-speed manual transmission is also upgraded to a more robust Tremec unit. The 10-speed automatic transmission remains optional.

Ford Mustang EcoBoost models come standard with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission available in the Mustang GT is the only transmission available on four-cylinder models, but rear-wheel drive remains standard.

What’s New for 2024?

Ford’s iconic pony car has been fully redesigned for the 2024 model year to kick off its seventh generation of production. Its styling remains muscular but falls more in line than with the 2015-2017 model year Mustangs than with 2018-2023 models. Critics have even been quick to point out that it looks similar to the current Chevrolet Camaro.

Regardless of what you think of its styling, the biggest change is under the hood. The new Mustang GT uses the same 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine from before, but it has been upgraded to produce 480 horsepower, 30 more than the previous-generation GT. A new Dark Horse model is also on the table with a 500-horsepower version of the same engine. It serves as a replacement for both the Mustang Mach 1 and the discontinued Shelby GT350.

Base four-cylinder Mustang EcoBoost models get a five-horsepower bump to 315 horsepower, but the six-speed manual gearbox has been dropped for that model altogether. In its place is a standard 10-speed automatic transmission.

All Mustangs benefit from various tech and performance upgrades as well as a better quality interior and superior materials.

What’s Good?

  • An even more potent selection of powertrains on tap for 2024
  • This is the best handling Mustang yet
  • Over 20 MPG on the highway with the GT and Dark Horse trims is good for a vehicle with this much power

What’s Bad?

  • Some Mustang trims share too many styling characteristics with the Chevrolet Camaro and Honda Accord
  • There is no more manual option for those who cannot afford the GT’s price tag.
  • A nearly $20,000 difference between the entry-level GT Coupe and the least expensive Dark Horse model may turn off some buyers

Would we buy one? Absolutely! The Mustang GT has always been one of our favorites, and it's just getting better with time

Overview:

2024 Ford Mustang GT Left Back Side (Overview)

With the recent death of the Dodge Challenger and the announcement that 2024 will be the Chevy Camaro’s final year of production, Ford has thankfully decided not only to keep the Mustang in production but to fully redesign it. There has already been some controversy surrounding its styling, but the Mustang continues to carry the pony car torch into the modern era.

Mustang GT models compete closely with other high-performance sports cars, such as the Toyota Supra, Chevy Camaro SS, Nissan Z, BMW Z4, and even the entry-level Chevrolet Corvette and BMW M2. Lower-powered Ford Mustang EcoBoost models compete better with the likes of the Subaru BRZ, the Toyota GR86, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but even base four-cylinder Mustangs are much larger and more powerful than these models.

This proves just how versatile the Mustang has become, though. It has evolved into a true rear-wheel drive performance car with handling to match its excellent and powerful Coyote V8 engine. EcoBoost models benefit from a fuel-efficient four-cylinder turbo that can get up to 33 MPG on the highway while still producing over 300 horsepower.

No Mustang is quite as nimble as the smaller Subaru BRZ, the Toyota GR86, or the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Neither do the most expensive models have quite the supercar allure of a Corvette Z06 or a Porsche 911. Still, the Mustang lineup has long arms, and Ford has created a near-perfect combination of sports car, performance car, and muscle car with the seventh-generation.

Overall Score: 4/5 stars

Driving Experience: 4.5/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Driving (Driving)

The Mustang's handling improved dramatically when it ditched its solid rear axle in favor of independent suspension for the 2015 model year, and the 2024 model is no exception. Both the EcoBoost and the GT models are agile and tackle corners with ease.

Adding the optional Performance Pack to either model adds goodies such as a Torsen limited-slip differential, MagneRide active suspension, wider tires, and larger brakes. The punch that both powertrains provide is exceptional, and braking power is equally impressive, regardless of whether or not any performance upgrades are installed.

The Dark Horse model is the most impressive of the bunch, being a track-focused evolution of the Mustang Mach 1. When not on the track, the majority of Mustangs settle down enough to provide a relaxed ride without beating up passengers.

The Mustang is larger and heavier than sports cars such as the Nissan Z, the Toyota Supra, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata. It does a good job of hiding its 3,600-pound curb weight, but several competitors are nimbler when pushed hard. Equipping the Performance Pack helps, but nothing can beat the Mustang GT’s sound when the active exhaust and throttle are fully open.

Safety Features: 4.5/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Dashboard and Seats (Safety)

At the time of writing, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has crash-tested the 2024 Ford Mustang GT, which is common among sports cars with lower projected production numbers. Again at the time of writing, ratings had not been awarded to competitors such as the Nissan Z, the Toyota Supra, or the MX-5 Miata.

Despite the lack of a rating, the new Mustang has a long list of standard safety features that rival the most comprehensive in the segment. Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams build the foundation of what the Mustang has to offer.

The Nissan Z is packed with standard driver assistance features, even outdoing pricier sports cars and sports sedans. Many other sports cars in the segment do not offer blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert as standard, but the Z comes with the additional benefit of having adaptive cruise control as standard across its lineup. Adaptive cruise control is optional with the Mustang, affording it some extra brownie points.

Value: 4.5/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Front (Value)

The Mustang offers excellent value. Base four-cylinder models are not that much more expensive than a brand-new base model Subaru BRZ, a Toyota GR86, or a Mazda MX-5 Miata, but the EcoBoost Mustang has more impressive specs. With the additional safety features and fuel economy that the seventh-generation Mustang provides, it is quite the deal, even if buyers opt for the more expensive Premium trim.

Mustang GTs offer equally impressive value. It offers 80 more horsepower, slightly better standard technology, and more cargo space than the Nissan Z at roughly the same starting price. The $70,000 base model Corvette is an equally impressive vehicle with better handling and acceleration, but it only makes 10 more horsepower than the Mustang GT and there is no manual transmission option.

We think the Mustang GT offers better overall value than its four-cylinder brother, but options can quickly ramp up the price. Additionally, the Corvette still stands in the Mustang’s way as the ultimate American performance car, even with its higher price tag. The Chevy Camaro matches the Mustang well in terms of price and bargain performance, but this year’s redesign puts the Mustang one step ahead.

Tech Features: 4/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Infotainment (Tech)

Alongside its styling updates, the Mustang also received several tech upgrades over the previous generation model. Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system now runs through a standard 13.2-inch touchscreen. It offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the FordPass Connect app. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, a six-speaker audio system, and automatic climate control round out the Mustang’s suite of infotainment and HVAC systems.

Other standard tech features include LED headlights, LED taillights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and push-button start. Dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and wireless device charging highlight the less exciting extras.

Active exhaust, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, Brembo brakes, MagneRide adaptive suspension, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio stereo, and an electronic drift brake are available with various packages or as buyers climb the trim level ladder. Many of the Mustang’s tech features focus on driving rather than comfort, but that suits buyers and the car perfectly.

Practicality: 4/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Trunk (Practicality)

Even the most practical sports cars are quite impractical compared with most sedans, vans, pickup trucks, and SUVs. Despite this, the Mustang is surprisingly practical for a car of its type. Its trunk has 13.5 cubic feet available if you opt for the fastback coupe, while the convertible's has 11.4 cubic feet. Both of those numbers are good compared to the field, including the Nissan Z’s meager 6.9 cubic feet.

Both the fastback coupe and the convertible have seating for four, but the cramped rear seats are a common gripe. Again, that is to be expected and is common in the class. It offers more usable rear seats than competitors such as the Subaru BRZ, the Toyota GR 86, and the Camaro, and the fact that it has them puts the MX-5 Miata, the Nissan Z, and the Toyota Supra at an immediate disadvantage.

The Mustang’s front seats make up for its lack of rear space. Passengers can stretch out, making the Mustang a usable daily driver. EcoBoost models even see over 30 MPG on the highway, while GTs are a bit less practical as everyday drivers, but they remain one of the most usable sports cars at their price point.

Styling & Design: 3/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Front Left Side (Styling)

We like the Mustang’s shape – familiar and reminiscent of the sixth-generation car. What we don't like is the front end. Without the more aggressive grille and hood vents of the GT and Dark Horse models, it just reminds us too much of a Honda Accord. The more aggressive the trim, the better the car looks and feels, and we're fans of the edgier rear-end lines, regardless of the engine or trim level.

Ford made improvements to the interior as well. Nothing in the cabin will blow your mind, but everything is accessible and functional. Outward visibility is still notably better than the Camaro's. Models equipped with leather upholstery add a nice touch, but the Recaro seats are more fitting for a car of such pedigree and performance.

The Dark Horse trims with spoilers, vents, and flairs look the best without question. We did like the more serious look of the previous generation a little better, but the latest model's interior is a big improvement.

Fuel Efficiency: 4/5 stars

2024 Ford Mustang GT Speedmeter (Efficiency)

The EcoBoost is the fuel economy winner in the lineup. Four-cylinder Mustangs without the Performance pack will see EPA fuel economy estimates of 22 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. Highway gas mileage drops to 29 MPG and city mileage drops by one with the optional Performance pack.

The most fuel-efficient Mustang GTs earn EPA fuel economy estimates of 15 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. Buyers who opt for the six-speed manual transmission in place of the 10-speed auto can expect one MPG less in both the city and the highway. Both manual and automatic Mustang Dark Horse models still get 14 MPG in the city, but highway mileage drops to 22.

Most competing sports cars with four-cylinder engines fall just below the EcoBoost’s fuel economy estimates. The MX-5 Miata is one of the most fuel-efficient sports cars on the market, but it is also one of the smallest and least powerful. The V8 Mustangs’ gas mileage estimates are respectable given the power they produce, but fewer vehicles are offered with V8 engines and more of them can outpace the thirstiest Mustangs than ever before.

What’s it Going to Cost Me?

2024 Ford Mustang GT Profile (Cost)

The Ford Mustang is offered in two trim levels with the choice of two different engines, three different power outputs, and two possible body styles depending on the powertrain and trim level. A base model and premium model are offered with each of the three available engine outputs, providing buyers with six different price points.

Regardless of the trim level, each Mustang comes standard with rear-wheel drive and four seats in addition to Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.

The base model Ford Mustang EcoBoost Fastback coupe starts at $32,515 after the destination fee is added. It comes with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Several of the items included in the packages above can be purchased as standalone options and are available alongside other options like a $200 engine block heater, $495 Grabber Blue brake calipers, and a $600 automotive cover.

Stepping up to the Ford Mustang EcoBoost Premium Fastback coupe will cost buyers $38,040. In addition to the base model’s standard features and the base model’s standard convertible features, the EcoBoost Premium trim also adds wireless device charging and synthetic leather upholstery. Opting for the EcoBoost Premium Convertible will cost an additional $5,500.

A $3,000 EcoBoost Premium High package will add illuminated door sills, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, driver’s seat memory functionality, the same security features as the base model convertible, and adaptive cruise control.

The same Nite Pony, Performance Package, and Wheel & Stripe Package from the base model EcoBoost Mustang are also available on the Premium trim. In addition to these, a Bronze appearance package is available and adds bronze-painted wheels and badges.

Buyers can also choose to add MagneRide dampers for $1,750, active exhaust for $1,225, and Recaro leather-trimmed seats in fastback models.

Base model Ford Mustang GT Fastback coupe models start at $43,540. A convertible option is not available with this trim level. All standard features from the base model EcoBoost Mustang carry over to the Mustang GT, but it comes with the 480-horsepower 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine.

In addition to the features from the base EcoBoost, Mustang GTs come with larger front brakes, power-adjustable front seats, functional hood vents, and a standard six-speed manual transmission with downshift rev matching.

The GT’s High equipment package costs $2,000 and is available on fastback coupe models. It features a nine-speaker audio system, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a power-operated driver’s seat, and heated front seats.

The Nite Pony package remains available with this trim level and a GT Performance Package can be added for $4,995. It includes 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, heavy-duty front springs, a K-brace, a strut-tower brace, a Torsen limited-slip differential, an upgraded rear sway bar, a rear wing, and upgraded chassis tuning.

Buyers can also choose to add active exhaust, remote start, and many of the other accessories available from lower trim levels.

The $47,825 Ford Mustang GT Premium Fastback coupe inherits all the standard features from the EcoBoost Premium model with the same powertrain from the base GT. Unlike that trim level, a convertible version is available for an extra $5,500. It comes with the equipment from the standard GT’s High equipment package.

In addition to the High equipment package, Nite Pony package, the GT Performance package, and the Bronze Appearance package, buyers can equip the $1,995 California Special Package. It includes California Special badging, blue trim accents, and blue aluminum wheels for cars equipped with the GT Performance package as well. Adaptive Cruise control is also available.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse is only available as a fastback coupe, and starts at $61,080 after the destination fee is added. It also utilizes the 5.0-liter V8 from the GT models, but horsepower is boosted to 500. As the most track-focused Mustang in the lineup, the Dark Horse benefits from the standard features of lower trim levels plus the upgraded accessories that come with the GT Performance package.

Unique exterior trim accents, an upgraded air intake, adaptive cruise control, MagneRide adaptive suspension, active exhaust, a performance rear spoiler, and a heavy-duty radiator with upgraded cooling all come standard. Buyers who stick with the stick will benefit from a Tremec six-speed manual transmission.

A $4,995 Dark Horse Handling package is available with unique 19-inch machined aluminum wheels, upgraded summer tires, and adjustable strut mounts.

The most expensive Mustang in the lineup is the Ford Mustang Dark Horse Premium. It starts at $65,720 with the destination and acquisition fees added. It too is only available as a fastback coupe and includes ventilated seats, aluminum pedals, and approach detection with lighting in addition to the regular Dark Horse’s standard features.

A $1,500 Dark Horse Appearance package is also available. It adds a black roof, blue brake calipers, and additional hood graphics with either Blue Ember Metallic, Vapor Blue Metallic, or Shadow Black Metallic paint.

Our Mustang of choice would be the base Mustang GT, but we would also equip the Performance package. Its performance is just too close to the Dark Horse’s to make us reach any higher.
