If you are in the market for a used car, you are probably also worried about reliability. Without the security blanket of a full factory-backed warranty that comes with a new car, most buyers are trying to make sure they do not end up buying a lemon.  

That’s why we have compiled a list of the most reliable used cars on the market. These are the best used cars as ranked by [J.D. Power](https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2023-us-vehicle-dependability-studyvds) and [Consumer Reports](https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/10-most-reliable-cars-a6569295379/). Among the most reliable cars, there is a wide range of options from fuel-efficient hatchbacks to luxury cars and sports cars. 

Rather than just present them in order we have broken them into categories to make it easier for you to compare similar models. Some cars were picked by Consumer Reports and others will have a J.D. Power reliability score, but any of these should give you the best chance at a relatively trouble-free and reliable used car.

J.D Power rankings include late-model cars produced as long ago as 2019, while Consumer Reports rankings are based on owner surveys for cars from 2020 up to cars as new as early in the  2024 model year. Both use different criteria, so even though the scales are out of 100, the two numbers should not be used as a direct comparison.

J.D. Power gives the 2020 Chevy Sonic a 93 out of 100 on its reliability scale, making it among the top-ranked overall. The Sonic is also just one of two American cars on our list. In its final production year of 2020, all Sonics came with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine making 138 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The model was available in both a four-door hatchback and sedan body style.

The 2019 Kia Rio received a reliability score of 91/100 from J.D. Power. The Rio was inexpensive when new and should be a great value on the used car market. Power for the model comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired making 130 horsepower. The ride is comfortable and the suspension is nicely balanced.

Entry-level models have a 5.0-inch infotainment display, while higher trims have a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Top-end models also get safety features like automatic emergency braking. Fuel economy is EPA estimated at 37 MPG on the highway. Interior materials and comfort punch above the car’s tiny size and low price point.

It should come as no surprise to find the Toyota Corolla on the Consumer Reports list. With a score of 77 out of 100 the Corolla is in the top ten overall cars for reliability. The Honda Civic however was left off the list, so buyers looking for a compact sedan with the best reliability should lean towards the Toyota. The Corolla had a significant redesign in 2020 and we recommend models from that year or newer. Most models feature a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, and it is paired with a CVT delivering 139 horsepower to the front wheels. SE and XSE trims get a 2.0-liter engine with 169 horsepower.

The Corolla is comfortable with a smooth ride and a spacious interior. A standard touchscreen infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, though Android Auto can be found on 2021 or newer models. When equipped with the larger, more powerful engine, EPA estimates are 40 MPG on the highway, while the smaller engine should return up to 38 MPG. Standard safety equipment is impressive with all models including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The Forester rides the line between car and SUV, like many crossovers, but we felt it was a great addition to this list. With a CR reliability score of 82, the Forester is a great option for buyers wanting great reliability rankings and standard all-wheel drive. The Forester was all new for 2019, so stick to that model year or newer. The 2019 Forester had a 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower. That engine was paired with a CVT and the aforementioned AWD.

The Forester is less refined, but more rugged than many of the competitors in its class, not delivering the most comfortable ride or most premium materials, but giving a simple, sturdy car aimed at outdoorsy buyers. Front and rear seats are spacious and cargo space is plentiful. A 6.5-inch or 8.0-inch touchscreen is included depending on trim level and both systems come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 33 MPG is pretty good for a vehicle with AWD. Standard safety tech is above average for the time with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid scores 87 out of 100 (tied with the Toyota 4Runner for top marks overall) and the non-hybrid is just behind at 86 out of 100. Toyota’s long history with hybrid cars, starting way back with the original Toyota Prius, has made them among the best when it comes to fuel-sipping, reliable cars. The king of reliable midsize sedans got a full redesign in 2018, riding on an all-new platform, so shop for a 2018 or newer. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 203 horsepower, optional drivetrains include a sporty V6 engine with 302 horsepower as the most powerful option or a hybrid powertrain with 208 horsepower.

The interior is roomy and spacious, with added luxuries like heated front seats included as standard equipment. 7.0-inch or 8.0-inch touchscreen systems run the infotainment system depending on trim level and include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In its most efficient trim, the Camry Hybrid gets up to 53 MPG highway, while the four-cylinder gas-only model gets as high as 39 MPG. Standard safety tech includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The 300 has had few meaningful updates in the last several model years, so we recommend looking for the lowest mileage and best condition model in your price range, rather than a specific year. The Chrysler 300’s aging bones have one big advantage, reliability. Scoring a 92 out of 100 on J.D. Power’s reliability metrics the 300’s proven powertrain options should make it a great daily driver which will give buyers few problems. Base models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A more powerful Hemi V8 engine ups horsepower to 363 but is drastically less fuel efficient. Rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel-drive is available, but only for V6-equipped cars.

Inside the 300 is roomy and ranges from basic to near-luxury depending on which trim level. All trims include an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Chrysler consistently gets good marks for their intuitive and responsive user interface, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Standard safety features are few, but higher trim levels offer automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. In its most efficient trim, the 300 delivers fuel economy of 30 MPG highway. The Chrysler 300’s corporate cousin, the Dodge Charger, scores between 87-92 out of 100 depending on which model year, and is worth considering for buyers looking for a car with a muscular attitude and high-level durability.

The now-discontinued Toyota Avalon can be a great value on the used vehicle market, offering comfort, dependability, and affordability while also scoring 85 out of 100 from J.D. Power.

Two powertrain options were available in the final years of the Avalon’s run. A 3.5-liter V6 with 301 horsepower paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with a CVT. All Avalons were front-wheel drive.

The Lexus IS scores an impressive 92 out of 100 from J.D. Power. Used luxury vehicles from Acura and Lexus are often atop reliability rankings, and the IS is among the most reliable of those. The IS received a refresh for the 2020 model year, so that is a good place to start shopping. IS300 models are powered by a 241-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and IS350 gets a 311-horsepower V6 engine. If you're looking for something more fun to drive, keep an eye out for F Sport trims, which add performance-oriented goodies.

The IS is a compact luxury car, so overall space is tight compared to larger offerings, but the interior is well-designed and the materials are premium. A standard 8.0-inch touchscreen or optional 10.3-inch touchscreen handle infotainment duties and include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. For best fuel economy select the IS300 with rear-wheel drive which gets up to 31 MPG on the highway. Automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control are included on every trim.

The Genesis G70 gets a great 91 out of 100 on J.D. Power’s reliability ratings, making the Korean alternative luxury brand even more appealing when compared to models from more prestigious or well-known manufacturers. The model launched in 2019 and has ranked well for reliability since its debut. 

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is the base engine and has 252 horsepower when paired with the standard automatic transmission or 255 when paired with the optional manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. A more 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 ups power to 365, but is available with the automatic transmission only. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel-drive is available with either engine, as long as the automatic transmission is selected.

Inside, you would be shocked to know this vehicle comes from the same parent company that makes the Kia Soul. The G70 is a true luxury competitor with standard equipment and optional upgrades to compete with anything in the class.

The answer is always Miata, and it is true again when it comes to choosing a reliable sports car. The Miata was named the most reliable new sports car by Consumer Reports, and they gave the 2019 model a reliability rating of 86 out of 100. 

The Miata is also one of the most affordable used sports cars. In 2019 the Miata got an upgraded 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a big power bump up to 181 horsepower, up to 155 the prior year. A six-speed manual transmission came standard or an optional automatic was also available.

A standard soft top model will likely have fewer issues than the power hard top of the RF model. A touchscreen infotainment system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Being that the Miata is a two-seat roadster, space is tight. Seating is comfortable for all but the tallest drivers. The trunk is small, and the limited interior storage means you’ll need to pack light. 

Fuel economy is excellent with up to 35 MPG highway for automatic-equipped models and 34 MPG with the manual transmission. No major safety tech is included as standard, but optional safety equipment includes low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning.

Though it is certainly not a budget-friendly vehicle the Porsche 911 does receive an excellent reliability score of 91 out of 100 for the 2019 model, which was the final model year of the 991 generation. So if you are looking to save a few thousand off MSRP by buying sued, expect a 911 to have a lower cost of ownership than other sports cars in the same price-class. 

For 2019 a range of twin-turbocharged flat-six engines offered at least 370 horsepower and up to 450 depending on trim. Turbo and Turbo S models push those numbers even higher. A seven-speed automatic was standard and a dual-clutch PDK automatic could be optioned. Rear-wheel-drive was standard as well, and AWD was optional.

Inside the 911 offers premium materials and comfortable, supportive front seats. There is such a huge range of trim levels and customization, you should be able to find a 911 for even the most discerning buyers. The rear-engine layout means cargo space is limited to a small storage area under the front hood, or what you can fit in the rear seats. 

Speaking of rear seats, don’t plan on shuttling more than two people in the 911. Front and rear parking sensors are standard, but any other safety and driver assistance features were options. When shopping for a used Porsche 911, an original window sticker goes a long way to understanding the equipment.
