The Outlander PHEV is a new addition for 2023 to the Outlander model lineup. The non-hybrid Outlander was an all-new vehicle for the 2022 model year, and the PHEV model shares those nearly-new bones, updates, and features. 

The revamp of the regular Outlander made significant improvements to the interior quality and design, as well as including a more modern exterior look. The new plug-in hybrid powertrain offers 38 miles of all-electric range and can operate as a series hybrid or parallel hybrid for peak efficiency. The PHEV is the top powertrain offering for the fourth-generation Outlander and is treated as a separate model.

The Outlander PHEV is an SUV for buyers who want improved overall fuel economy and fewer emissions, but are not quite ready to make the jump to an all-electric vehicle. This Plug-in hybrid can cover up to 38 miles of electric range when fully charged and has a traditional internal combustion engine for longer trips. Unfortunately, when the electricity runs out, fuel mileage is middling at best.

The Outlander is the only compact PHEV SUV with three rows of seating currently on the market in the United States. Its closest PHEV rivals may just be the [Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid](https://www.autolist.com/chrysler-pacifica) minivan or larger [Kia Sorento PHEV](https://www.autolist.com/kia-sorento+plug+in+hybrid) for those wanting maximum occupancy of at least seven. Overall the Outlander PHEV may be a good choice for buyers with a short daily commute, who only occasionally go on longer trips. If you also sometimes need seating for seven, the Outlander makes even more sense. Those longing to go electric, but worried about these occasional uses, might find the Outlander PHEV a perfect fit.

The Outlander offers surprisingly quick acceleration, with zero to 60 coming in around seven seconds.

Handling is also strong for the class, with the S-AWC system dolling out grip, and offering driving dynamics that do not feel like they belong in a three-row crossover. 

Mitsubishi has also done well with the model’s regenerative braking. The system can’t offer true one-pedal driving, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop, but does consistently slow the vehicle to around five miles per hour before the brake pedal is needed. 

The cabin is surprisingly quiet regardless of whether the Outlander PHEV is using its electric motors or the gas engine.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the regular Outlander did receive a five-star crash test rating.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not released a complete report for the Outlander PHEV but does rate the highest Good rating for headlights, as well as top Superior marks for front crash prevention. The latest generation Outlander also received a Top Safety Pick+ designation after its 2022 release.

The Outlander PHEV includes an impressive suite of standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and trailer stability control.

With three rows of seating and standard AWD, the Outlander has few rivals when it comes to value. Despite dealership markups and inventory issues for many brands, you may actually be able to find an Outlander PHEV at near MSRP.

The Outlander PHEV undercuts competitors like the [RAV4 Prime](https://www.autolist.com/toyota-rav4+prime) and the three-row [Kia Sorento](https://www.autolist.com/kia-sorento+plug+in+hybrid) but costs more than the [Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid](https://www.autolist.com/hyundai-tucson+plug+in+hybrid), and nearly the same as the [Ford Escape PHEV](https://www.autolist.com/ford-escape+hybrid). The Outlander is planted firmly in the middle of the pack when it comes to the base price.

Each step up in trim level delivers appropriate levels of luxury, to the point that the best value may be opting for one of the highest trims.

In base trim, the new Outlander PHEV includes tech features like a digital gauge cluster, an infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a smartphone app that can control some vehicle functions, and a six-speaker stereo system

The infotainment system is reasonably responsive and intuitive, and the interior features enough physical buttons to make basic adjustments a breeze.

High-end models can be optioned with a larger infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and a Bose premium sound system.

The Outlander edges out other compact PHEV SUVs with two extra seats in the third row. Those seats, however, are minuscule and should only be considered for small children. For longer trips, the rear seat may be uncomfortable even for kids. 

Cargo capacity is average for the class at 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded down, but because of the third row, cargo space is tiny with all seats in their upright positions at just 9.1 cubic feet.

The Outlander’s towing capacity of 1500 pounds is less than the [RAV4 Prime](https://www.autolist.com/toyota-rav4+prime) which can tow up to 2,500 pounds and [Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid](https://www.autolist.com/hyundai-tucson+plug+in+hybrid) which can tow 2,000 pounds but matches the [PHEV Ford Escape](https://www.autolist.com/ford-escape+hybrid).

The Outlander PHEV’s Super All-Wheel Control AWD system offers several driving modes, and though it is mostly oriented toward on-road performance, does add some limited offroad capability. Drive modes include Normal, Power, Eco, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud.

The new Outlander PHEV has an interior that is improved in both form and function. Higher quality materials are matched with each trim level. The interior has a tidy, modern design and the overall ergonomics and comfort are excellent.

Front and second-row seats offer plentiful legroom and the seating surfaces themselves are supportive. Third-row seating is laughably small, and should not be considered for those needing to transport adults. Only the smallest of children will find the space comfortable and that is likely a temporary feeling.

The Outlander PHEV has exterior styling that could certainly be considered modern but may be polarizing to buyers. It has love it or hate it looks, but it definitely has a presence. 

With the redesign for the 2022 model year, Mitsubishi succeeded in bringing the Outlander up to today’s standards, and with the addition of the plug-in hybrid powertrain the Outlander PHEV adds modern propulsion to a nice package.

With 38 miles of range on electric power, the majority of the average daily commute should be gas-free. An average American covers about 41 miles per day commuting to and from work.

Unfortunately, when the gas engine is required, fuel economy does not keep up with others in the segment. The EPA estimates a combined cycle economy of just 26 MPG and an overall fuel economy of 64 MPGe. In hybrid mode, the Outlander PHEV is drastically outdone by the class-leading [RAV4 Prime](https://www.autolist.com/toyota-rav4+prime) which nets a 38 MPG rating.

Charging the Outlander from near empty to full would take about 16 hours on a 120-volt home outlet. Hooking up to a Level 2 charger lower charging time to about 6.5 hours. On higher trims, DC fast charging is included and can top up the battery to 80% in under 40 minutes. Unfortunately, it is equipped with a CHAdeMO plug, and it may be difficult to find a compatible charging point.

In base __ES trim__, the Outlander PHEV starts at an MSRP of $41,190. For that price, you get the plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a 20.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. AWD drive is standard and includes multiple drive modes for more efficient driving or different weather and road conditions. 

When fully charged, the Outlander PHEV has up to 38 miles of EV range. Standard safety and driver assistance features include automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring with lane change assist, lane departure warning, driver attention alert, forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, hill start assist, rear automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and trailer stability assist. 

Outside, the Outlander PHEV ES gets 18-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, LED headlights and taillights, and tinted rear windows. Tech features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate control, four USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and steering wheel phone and audio controls. A five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty add to peace of mind.

Stepping up to the __SE trim__ raises the entry price to $43,490 and adds a few key features. Outside the Outlander gets 20-inch wheels, LED foglights, and a power liftgate. Interior upgrades include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, satellite radio, and a wireless charging pad. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition are also added to the list of safety features. SEL trim also unlocks DC fast charging capability. 

An SE Tech Package is available for an additional $2,100 which adds adaptive cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink, an upgraded eight-speaker audio system, a head-up display, heated rear seats, black roof rails, and a panoramic sunroof.

__SEL trim,__ which is what we tested, starts at $46,790 and adds features including an eight-way power driver’s seat with memory function, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, rear sunshades, roof rails, and three-zone automatic climate control.

An SEL Touring Package raises the total price to $48,990 and adds a head-up display, Bose premium sound system, power panoramic sunroof, and heated steering wheel.

For even more luxury an SEL Premium Package with a total MSRP of $49,490 adds semi-aniline leather upholstery, driver and passenger seat massage function, and quilted leather trim to the included equipment of the Touring Package. 

Top tier __40th Anniversary trim__ for the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV starts at $51,340 and includes many specs from the lower trim level’s optional packages as well as some exclusive features. This trim comes with a Bose Premium audio system, an eight-way power passenger seat with memory, driver and passenger massage seats, heated rear seats, a power panoramic sunroof, semi-aniline leather upholstery, and 40th-anniversary logos, badging, and a special paint job with bronze-colored roof.
