Engine makes up for iffy trim
I suspect that this review would look a lot different if had been for any of the other engine options available. The car came to me in 2008 with about 65,000 miles on it. As is typical of Saturn, there is quiet a lot of plastic, both inside and out, but I don't mind the styling too terribly. The design is beginning to show its age a bit, but it's not something that bothers me. What does bother me, however, is the curiously poor fit and finish on display. At highway speeds, every window and door whistles and rattles, making a distracting and frustrating racket. We recently made a 13 hour round trip drive back home, and the passenger door makes so much noise above 75 mph that it was impossible to get any rest in that seat unless we lowered our speed. The steering wheel makes a horrible squealing sound in either direction that worsens in cold weather. Having researched this issue a bit, it appears to be a pretty major fix, as well. The ignition in this car grinds down keys over time, eventually (as in, every year or so) rendering them inoperable and requiring key replacement. Speaking with a GM tech friend of mine, this is a known issue with these ignitions, and I can look forward to replacing it when the key filings inevitably build up enough to short it out. The driver's seat heater also stopped working at some point, but I now live in a warm climate, so I haven't had that looked into. Also, the suspension in this car likes to make a lot of noise. Lots of clunks during normal driving, even immediately after having a $ 1,300 replacement of struts and other suspension components. Again, something that appears to be common with this car. With all of that said, however, the drivetrain in this car is good enough to make all of those issues seem minor. It's my understanding that this particular 3.5L V6 is a Honda creation, which has its own difficulties (having the timing chain replaced on this particular engine is notoriously difficult and expensive), but boy does it perform. This is a small SUV; you're not going to be blowing the doors off of anyone, but this engine delivers pretty much anything else you ask of it. Acceleration is prompt and power delivery is smooth and level across revs. The automatic gearbox can get a bit confused with slight grades at highway speeds, sometimes flipping back and forth between gears, but during typical driving it's more than adequate. We have a dog and make regular long-distance trips (the car now has 135,000 miles), and the layout and features of the rear passenger area and tailgate area work beautifully for us. We were recently looking at a new car for my fiancé, and noticed that we were drawn to cargo areas that had similar features and dimensions. A handful of tie-downs and a fold-away cargo organizer give you pretty decent flexibility. Finally, even loaded down we get surprisingly decent efficiency. We have tracked our last three trips, and have averaged 28mpg highway, and it's worth noting that neither of us are particularly careful when it comes to driving to preserve fuel.

Great Starter Car
This is a great starter car, I bought it right out of college and it has served me well. The gas mileage is great, working 25 miles from home I only had to fill up once a week. As a young woman I feel incredibly safe driving in the car and I love the mommy control panel as I call it. I can control all the windows, radio, etc... From my steering wheel. I have moved with this car seven times in the four years that I owned it and each time I am amazed at how much I can fit into my car. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds down so you can fit larger items in easily. I am glad that I bought this car, it was a good deal for a first car when you get a real job. Now that I have had it for a few years and my status in life has improved I am looking forward to upgrading.

They talked with me long enough so that they could understand what exactly it was that I was looking for. The salesman then collaborated with another to go through their inventory to try to find one that was as I wanted. They worked with me on a price and we ended up agreeing on a price that worked well with my budget and what I was willing to spend.

I don't know about it being the best, but they were one of the few to actually want to finance me. I was 18 at the time and my options were extremely limited. The dealer offered to lower my payments as he knew I was planning to attend college. The car runs fine and I haven't had any problems with it.
