Is a car necessary in Glendale?

In the City of Glendale, it is permissible to make right hand turn at an intersection when the light is red only when safe to do so. But use caution, we have "right hand turn lanes" so after making that right hand turn, the lane you pulled into may quickly be merging into other traffic.
You are safe to turn on red when the turning lane and the next lane over are clear. If not, you may get pretty jammed up.
When buying a car in this city I would suggest shopping the "auto districts".
There are 2 main areas, Bell Road west of the SR101 and Camelback Road around 51st Ave.
Lots of dealers all grouped together, you can get some competitive pricing that way.
My favorite memory in driving in Glendale would have to be when driving around during the holidays and checking out all the Christmas lights. Glendale is filled with many sub-division of homes. It is very interesting to get away from the main streets and drive into the areas where there are many homes that are decorated for the holidays.
Once off of the main streets, the speed limit drops down to 25 mph which is very relaxing and provides a safe speed to "cruse" and "site see".
When driving through the sub-divisions, at times you forget you are actually still in the city.
Bell Road. Bell Road can get you anywhere you need to go! Restaurants, grocery stores, sporting goods, clothing stores, etc. Bell Road has an endless array of shopping. The street is very well maintained, the traffic signals are well set, etc.
Also, Bell Road is stretched for miles!!! Just by taking this road you can easily get from city to city across the Valley. From Scottsdale to Glendale to Peoria to Sun City, and even into Surprise! If you are from out of town, stick to Bell Road, it will take you to many places.

Leave early. While the streets are fairly easy to navigate, there is a major railroad crossing through the heart of Glendale and this can delay you by about 15 minutes depending on the time of day. There are also street lights every couple blocks in downtown Glendale. Events in the city can also result in delays and street closures.
There is a lot of stop and go on the surface streets - fuel economy should be a big consideration. And if you're considering an older, used vehicle make sure the A/C is working well because you will spend a decent amount of your commute sitting at red lights. This will be very uncomfortable during 110 degree summers without A/C.
There are multiple events in Glendale and ne of the major events is Glendale Glitters during the holidays. Driving to the event is nice because there are lots of Christmas lights for the kids to enjoy.
59th avenue. 59th ave is a pretty straight shot from the North to South end of Glendale. It runs all the way into Phoenix so it's great for cross-town travel.
