## The Best Hardtop Convertibles for 2025

Convertibles have waned in popularity as crossovers have taken over the automotive market, and many remaining convertible cars are sold as soft-top convertibles only. New cars such as the Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster, the BMW Z4, the BMW 4-Series Convertible, the Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class, and the Lexus LC Convertible are offered solely with a soft top. 

Used cars such as the BMW 3-Series Convertible, the Mercedes-Benz SLK 300, the Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class, the Chrysler Crossfire, the Cadillac XLR, and the Volvo C70 are available with a retractable hardtop, but they're becoming harder to find in good condition. Buyers can still find new 2024 Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolet models, but both were discontinued for the 2025 model year, and only come with soft-top roofs.

The Jeep Wrangler is the quintessential off-road SUV, but part of what makes it so loveable is its ability to provide an open-air experience while tackling tough terrain. Most trim levels come with a standard soft-top roof, but a hardtop roof can be equipped on any trim level. Some top-tier trim levels such as the Rubicon X, the Rubicon 4Xe, and the High Altitude 4Xe even have a hardtop roof as standard.

Two-door and four-door body styles are available, as are several  different powertrains. Standard Wranglers come with a 285-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 with a six-speed manual transmission. Originally, Jeep axed the eight-speed automatic transmission, but it recently returned due to popular demand. A 270-horsepower turbo-four is also available and comes with the eight-speed auto.

Wrangler 4Xe models feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and those specs are ideal for hardcore rock climbing with the top down, but don't worry if that doesn't tickle your fancy. Both the manufacturer and aftermarket support for customization are strong, which allows you to turn your Wrangler into just about anything.

The McLaren 720S is quite the supercar. It has the looks to match its 740-horsepower, mid-mounted, twin-turbo V8 engine, and of course, it has a power-folding hardtop roof. Even though this saps valuable cargo space compared to its coupe sibling, buyers have the added benefit of an open-air driving experience.

Its powertrain produces 590 lb-ft of torque, which it sends to the rear wheels, and the handling is excellent. It can hit a reported top speed that easily clears the 200 MPH mark, and its sub-three-second 0-60 MPH time is appropriate for a supercar of its caliber.

It will cost buyers more than $300,000, but much like other high-end vehicles, each 720S is highly customizable. Even though this is unattainable to the average buyer, the 720S earns its price tag.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is much more attainable to the everyman than the McLaren 720S, but it shares a spot in our rankings thanks to its excellent handling, its affordable starting price tag, and its peppy attitude. “RF” stands for retractable fastback, and it gives the traditional Miata a coupe-like appearance rather than the typical roadster design for which it's known.

Despite only having 181 horsepower from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with no turbo, the Miata RF is able to spring to 60 MPH in less than six seconds, thanks to its rear-wheel drive layout, its standard six-speed manual transmission, and its low 2,500-pound curb weight. Even though it's heavier than the lightest soft-top convertible model, the RF undercuts other sports car competitors such as the Toyota GR86, the Subaru BRZ, and the Nissan Z by hundreds of pounds. 

Even though its performance specs are underwhelming on paper compared to many performance cars, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more entertaining car to drive. Its responsiveness and small size make it feel much faster than it actually is, and the power is approachable without being dangerous, allowing even inexperienced drivers to utilize its road-holding capabilities to the fullest.

In 2020, Chevy completely redesigned the Corvette to be radically different from its predecessors. The Corvette’s engine was moved behind the front seats to a mid-mounted position, giving it an extra dose of handling and placing it squarely in the crosshairs of supercar competitors from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McClaren.

Thankfully, America’s sports car had the goods to keep up. Its entry-level powertrain is a 490-horsepower V8 engine with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Z06 model features an even healthier 670-horsepower flat-plane crank V8 engine. Neither one is bad with the less powerful engine still propelling the mid-engine American supercar to 60 MPH in less than three seconds. 

Not only does it have removable roof panels to transform it into an open-air performance machine, but the panels can fit in the trunk. When the roof panels are not in the trunk and it's not being tossed around corners, buyers will enjoy 13 cubic feet of storage, in addition to lxuuries such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an eight-inch touchscreen display. Despite its long history as a performance car, it can just as easily settle into being a usable daily driver.

Ferrari is known for making some of the best and the most prestigious two-seater supercars of all time. The Ferrari Portofino, the 812 GTS, and the 488 Spider are among the best hardtop convertibles the firm has ever made, but if you want the best of the Italian automaker’s current lineup, the 296 GTS is the one to have. Few will, considering its massive price tag, but it's worth it to the select few who can get their hands on one.

Its plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, an electric motor, and a 6.0-kWh battery pack that sends a total of 819 horsepower to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The result is a 0-60 MPH time of less than three seconds and a top speed of 205 miles per hour. Of course, its mid-engine layout means handling is not lost to outright speed. 

It features a retractable hardtop that will come in handy on sunny track days, and it folds down quickly. A panel opens up behind the headrests, and the roof simply flips up and over, to be covered up again by the same panel once it comes to rest.

If you're looking for a hardtop convertible but want a slightly different flavor than what Ferrari or McLaren have to offer, consider Maserati—specifically, the MC20 Cielo. It costs around $100,000 less than the 296 GTS, also comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, and is quite possibly one of the best-looking performance cars on sale today.

It's not as powerful as the 296 GTS, but 621 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque are nothing to sneeze at. Its eight-speed dual-clutch transmission dispatches with 60 MPH in about 3.2 seconds, and its mid-mounted engine provides handling balance typical of a high-performance supercar. A retractable glass hardtop roof means you can enjoy all it has to offer as you take in the open air. 

One of the best aspects of the MC20 Cielo is its deceptively comfortable ride. It features adaptive suspension that can be adjusted according to the type of driving. It can certainly be stiffened to squeeze out every ounce of performance, but in comfort mode, you may forget how much of a monster this Italian drop-top really is.

There is no rule that says convertibles have to be classy cabriolets or high-performance supercars, as the Ford Bronco is a body-on-frame SUV with the Jeep Wrangler squarely in its crosshairs. Like the Wrangler, it's designed to tackle the toughest terrain, comes in two-door and four-door body styles, its doors are removable, and it has with a variety of different soft-top and hardtop roof configurations.

A 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower serves as the Bronco’s entry-level powerplant, and can be mated to a seven-speed manual transmission or a ten-speed automatic transmission. A 330-horsepower twin-turbo V6 is also available, but it comes exclusively with the ten-speed auto. Four-wheel drive is standard on every model, while off-road-themed extras such as locking differentials and all-terrain tires boost its capability. 

As a purpose-built off-roader, the Bronco doesn't have the best road manners, but that's hardly unexpected, and it's still perfect for a small family that loves to go adventuring. Its boxy shape allows for plenty of cargo space and rear-seat headroom, despite its classification as a small SUV, and the retro styling gives it a charm that many modern crossovers lack.
