Affordable new cars are becoming harder to find as global parts shortages, inflation, and other factors continue to affect the marketplace. 

Not to worry! As high as prices have jumped, there are still a variety of affordable choices for the budget-minded buyer.  

With the popularity of SUVs still at an all-time high, there are several cheap SUVs on the market that won't wipe out your bank account. 

While these are all subcompact SUVs, many won't feel like it. Even some of the cheapest subcompact SUVs have modern tech features, surprisingly roomy interiors, and safety features to keep you secure while driving.  

Unfortunately, several of the cheapest SUVs from 2022, including the Chevrolet Trax, Toyota C-HR, and Ford EcoSport have been discontinued for 2023. Other models like the Volkswagen Taos, Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V, and Subaru Crosstrek just miss our list as they fall outside of the top 10 cheapest SUV rankings. ### 2023 Hyundai Venue

The 2023 Hyundai Venue has the honor of being the cheapest SUV on sale today. As such there are many things one would expect to get – or not to get – at its price point. Most prominently, its 121-horsepower engine can feel slow to get up to speed. Additionally, all-wheel drive is out of the picture since only front-wheel drive is standard across its trim levels.

That being said, the Venue is a nimble handler around town, and its small proportions make it ideal as a city car. While you're in the city, you should get an EPA-estimated 29 MPG. Take it out on the highway and fuel economy will increase to 33 MPG. Either way, you will be relatively comfortable in its roomy-for-its-size interior and comfortable seats.  

Its interior is nice for its low price point, and tech features like an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an easy-to-use infotainment system come standard on the base model. An excellent 10-year/100,000-mile warranty accompanies safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and rear-seat alert.  

Topping out around $25,000 with all options added, you can get more features on higher trim levels like heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, navigation, and LED headlights without going too much higher on the price.

### 2023 Kia Soul

The Kia Soul is the subcompact crossover that most don't realize is a crossover. It feels more like a car than an SUV and comes with front-wheel drive. We like it because the base model is cheap, starting at a tick over $21,000.

Its boxy shape also helps it make the best of its interior space. There's plenty of headroom for taller passengers in both the front and rear seats, and its 24.2 cubic feet of cargo space is more than most of its competitors. Fold the rear seats down and you get over 62 cubic feet of cargo space, a figure that rivals some larger compact SUVs. 

A 147 horsepower 2.0-liter engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission to help it get going better than the Venue while still achieving 33 MPG on the highway.  

Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a digital gauge cluster, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. ### 2023 Nissan Kicks

Despite its Japanese roots, the Nissan Kicks has many similarities to its Korean rivals. A 122-horsepower, four-cylinder engine is perfectly suitable for running errands around town. Fuel economy is excellent at 31 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway thanks to its front-wheel drive-only layout.

The Kicks’ exterior styling is attractive, and its interior is nice though it still gives off base-model vibes. Cargo space is excellent for the class, and most passengers will have no issues fitting into either row. 

Standard safety features on even the cheapest model include lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams, an impressive list that is hard to overlook at its price point. 

Standard tech features like a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and push-button start are comparable with other subcompact SUVs at this price point.

### 2024 Chevrolet Trax

The Chevy Trax is back for the 2024 model year, kicking off its second generation of production. It's bigger than the outgoing model in nearly every dimension, and its styling is more in line with the edgier lines of its larger Chevrolet siblings.

A turbocharged three-cylinder engine sends 137 horsepower to the front wheels. Unlike many competitors in this low-price neighborhood, it comes with a six-speed automatic transmission rather than a CVT. 

A thoroughly modern interior comes with the new Trax, including an 8-inch touchscreen display, a 3.5-inch driver information display, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto now coming standard on the base model. With three more inches of rear legroom, two extra inches of width, and eleven more inches of overall length, passengers should have no problem riding in comfort.  

Perhaps the best upgrade from the outgoing model comes in the form of its list of standard safety features: Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and following distance indicator.

### 2023 Hyundai Kona

The 2023 Hyundai Kona is the third model from a Korean automaker among the top five cheapest SUVs on sale, but it is the first to cost more than $22,000. Coming off of a redesign for the 2022 model year, the Kona is modern, fresh, and has attractive safety and tech features at an affordable price.

Passenger and cargo space is more in line with what one would expect in a small SUV. The seats themselves are comfortable and try to make up for the limited head and legroom in the back. An 8-inch touchscreen, intuitive infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto also help.  

The cheapest Kona model relies on a 147-horsepower engine and continuously variable transmission to shuffle it around. Front-wheel drive is also standard, but that helps with its fuel efficiency: 30 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway. The Kona is the cheapest SUV to offer all-wheel drive as an option, but of course, that will cost more.  

Its impressive list of standard safety features includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, rear seat alert, and driver attention monitoring.

### 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Despite being more expensive than the new 2024 Chevy Trax, the Trailblazer will be the smallest crossover in Chevy’s lineup once the Trax’ dimensions grow for 2024. Not to be confused with the midsize Chevy Blazer, the Trailblazer is a more compact daily gettabout.

A small 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo puts 137 horsepower to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. Both are a little rough but get the job done. Likewise, the Trailblazer’s interior is a bit unrefined and basic. It is roomy, though, with enough rear-seat headroom and legroom for most adults. 

Cargo space is good with 25.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 54.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, and room for longer cargo as the front passenger seat can fold flat. While you are hauling your cargo, you can expect 30 combined MPG between your city and highway destinations.  

Standard equipment on the least expensive Trailblazer LS model includes a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, and rear seat alert.

### 2023 Mazda CX-30

The Mazda CX-30 is not only one of the cheapest SUVs you can buy, but it is also one of the sleekest. It comes with an excellent interior, stylish exterior, and sporty driving dynamics to match all of its good looks. Beyond that, the CX-30 is one of only 2 SUVs on our top ten list to come standard with all-wheel drive.

Extra horsepower has been extracted from the base engine for the 2023 model year. Last year’s model had 186, while this year’s model is bumped to 191, albeit with the same six-speed automatic transmission. That combination is good for 26 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. This is less fuel efficient than some rivals but is expected with its AWD system.  

An 8.8-inch infotainment screen serves as the centerpiece of the dashboard and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. A standard Wi-Fi hotspot and 8-speaker audio system pair with comfortable seats to give passengers a good riding experience. The low roofline and thick rear pillars can hamper visibility and do not accommodate tall adults as well as some.  

Even though it looks great and drives exceptionally well, the experience it provides is backed up with a wealth of standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, rain-sensing windshield wipers, driver attention monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

### 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is an oddball on our list of cheap SUVs. Mitsubishi doesn't really have the presence in the automotive market that it once did, and as a result, many buyers just overlook its vehicles. That's a shame because they're still an excellent choice, particularly for people on a tight budget for a new car.

It is the second crossover on our list to come standard with all-wheel drive. Its drivetrain is mated to a 148-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission. Unfortunately, this powertrain feels weak, and similarly weak fuel economy estimates of 23 MPG in the city and 29 on the highway lag behind competitors.  

Going with the cheap base model does not get you much in the way of tech features. It comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen and four speakers, but not much else. Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard safety features with a few more available on higher trim levels.  

Fortunately, you do get a 10-year-100,000-mile powertrain warranty with each Mitsubishi you purchase. With odd exterior styling and a cheap-feeling interior, it may be worth its low price, but that is for you to decide.

### 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross

One look at the Toyota Corolla Cross and you will understand why it bears that name. Drive it and you will understand more fully. It is practical, safe, and backed by Toyota’s reputation for quality. Thus, it stands in as a great alternative to the Corolla car or larger (and more expensive) RAV4.

It earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS in 2022, and with standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, rear-seat alert, and lane-departure warning, we expect the same level of safety for 2023. An 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are standard to entertain passengers while they travel in all of that safety.  

A lackluster 2.0-liter powerplant produces 169 horsepower, sends it all to the front wheels via a CVT, and achieves a combined 32 MPG while doing so. Though uninspiring when acceleration is needed, the engine is unobtrusive around town, and the ride comfort levels are high.  

Being on the larger end of the subcompact SUV segment, rear-seat passengers have reasonable legroom and headroom. 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space is available behind the rear seats for cargo. Even though the base model comes in under $25,000, a fully loaded Corolla Cross can easily surpass the $30,000 mark.

### 2023 Kia Seltos

The 2023 Kia Seltos edges out the Subaru Crosstrek by just a couple hundred dollars for the tenth spot on our list. Even though it is not as good off-road as the Subaru, the lowest-priced LX trim comes with all-wheel drive like its Japanese rival. There are plenty more things to like about the Seltos as well.

It is one of the larger subcompact SUVs in the class, giving rear-seat passengers a healthy 38 inches of legroom and 26.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind them. Headroom is also generous given that the Seltos is still a small SUV. Its ride is comfortable, but the seats are hard and can get uncomfortable over long trips.  

146 horsepower is available from its base engine, helping the Seltos achieve 27 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway. Moving to the similarly priced front-wheel drive S trim increases those estimates significantly. Despite its good fuel efficiency, its powertrain follows many other competitors in the segment and feels underwhelming.  
Safety and tech features make up for its lack of driving engagement. An 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, driver drowsiness alert system, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, and a rear-seat alert system all come standard for less than $25,000.
