Great at what it is.
The Jeep Cherokee was built as a rugged, rough outdoor truck that you can ride hard and put away wet. It was designed for the working American family that wanted to get away on the weekend. Advertised as the vehicle that can take you there, it really can. This vehicle is tough, you can't kill it. It is a great starter car for many reasons but it can also be a dangerous vehicle for a beginner driver at the same time. Some of its pros are the fact that it has one of the best four-wheel drive systems ever built and can go just about anywhere a stock vehicle can get. For this reason, they are popular with off-road clubs. These vehicles are not mechanically finicky and stay out of the frequent shop visits. Any work that needs to be done can easily be done out on the trails or in a home garage. Parts are cheap and easily attainable. Due to the nature of this vehicle being designed for on road and off road use though, it is not the best at either. Specifically road driving, the vehicle is very top heavy and can roll a lot easier than other vehicles if quick maneuvering at highway speeds is required. It utilizes a low maintenance inline 6 4.0L engine that requires very little attention but uses a lot of gasoline, making it a little rough on the wallet when stopping at the pumps.

Dependable and fun
We bought our Jeep Cherokee used and had 15 years of fun in it. We took it camping and it handled all the bumps in the country roads. An impressive feature was the Jeep was almost soundproof inside with the windows rolled up. We bought it when it was two years old and it was still like new when we sold it to a family member who is still driving it to this day! The only downsides to the Jeep would be the Injector O rings had to be replaced twice during the time we had it. If you know how to work on vehicles, then this would be no big deal for you. The second problem was the filter in the fuel tank, literally broke on us when we were driving in the bumpy country roads one afternoon, suddenly the jeep was dead on the road, had it towed and easily found the problem and fixed it. The third and final problem was a factory recall on the fuel throttle, which could have been deadly. The recall problem with the fuel throttle actually happened to me one afternoon while I was driving around our local town. I came to a red light, luckily no car was ahead of me. I applied the brake fully to stop at the red light and while I had my foot fully on the brake, the engine revved at a high rate and suddenly without warning, the Jeep jumped forward due to the fuel throttle engaging. These are literally the only the problems in all our years with our Jeep and we regret selling it when we did.
