My addiction started out innocently enough. We were drinking, barbecuing and having a good time at a friends when I first learned of "Kermit" my soon to be reason for working. I purchased this baby for $200 with a blown engine, easy enough right? Soon after buying, I had scouted an engine off a rollover, threw it in my other '98 Grand Cherokee, and I was off to the races. This car has a V8 5.2 Liter. It's not the needle in the haystack 5.9, but it was fast enough to dump check. Every mod I made on this thing was easy due to the spacious engine bay. Every thing in the car was a necessity -- no need for fancy stuff. This is a workhorse -- no more no less. I knew what I was getting into. So first things first, I got it running and performed maintenance (which btw is freaking simple, oil/plugs/filter/wires all within reach without lifting). Then the fun part, I threw in a K&N CAI, MSD Ignition Coil, Mustang Injectors, Flowmaster 40, 2.5' Y Pipe, Hi-Flo cat, Stereo and some Subs). Fifteen years later, it's still kicking -- growling like a mean lion from the second I start it till I put it to sleep. If you want reliability (yes, American is reliable), this car only had a water pump, radiator hose, thermostat transmission, and two sensors replaced (also engine cuz it was blown when I bought it). Performance -- straight out of the dealer, it's a beast. You get thrown back when you over take the little glass pack racers. Confidence -- this thing doesn't care about snow or mud. In fact, it prefers it. There's no better feeling than sloshing around snow or spinning mud everywhere. Space -- I can fit car engines in this rig. By far the biggest amount of space I have ever had outside of a pickup truck. This is the SUV for you! If you want your butt warm, go sit on the hood -- no seat warmers for you!

Sturdy car, but a disaster waiting to happen
This is a great riding car and great in the winter. It has a sturdy suspension and automatically switches to four-wheel drive when you need it to grip the road. We bought this car used and have driven it for nearly a year. There have been several significant recalls since we got it, and on top of that, we have spent over $3,000 on repairs already. It feels like we are just waiting for the next thing to break. Jeep has a long history of being a great outdoors car, but this large grocery getter is more like driving a luxury boat. The size makes it difficult to slip into parking spaces and zip around the city. On the highway it feels substantial with a nice sturdy ride. The downside is that it gobbles up the gas. It gets less than 15 MPG. It costs over $50 to fill up the tank at $2.50/gallon. The interior is very nice with heated leather seats in both the front and back seats. The heating system warms up fast. However, the cabin air filter collects every little thing and smells really bad when it's dirty -- so it needs to get cleaned every time we change the oil. Additionally, the electronics in the car act up occasionally so you don't know if the radio will go on or not. We would not recommend buying this car, and we will never have another Jeep again.
