2009 Jeep Patriot OWNER RATINGS & REVIEWS

It gets the job done but a bit glitchy.
This particular Jeep Patriot is a 2009, with 4 wheel drive. Features include CD player, electronic stability assist, air conditioning, manual windows and locks and automatic transmission.
The cream white paint job has suffered a bit over the years, showing a bit of rust along the lower interior door panels as well as the front and rear bumpers. While noticeable it has not spread to the point of making the vehicle excessively unsightly.
Fuel economy remains solid even after almost 100k miles, ranging around 25 mpg. The interior is roomy enough provided one isn't too tall (like I am). Those over six and a half feet in height will experience a shortage of knee room but it is still manageable and something you get used to.
The suspension is fairly smooth, handling is responsive and acceleration is ample. The 4 cylinder engine does NOT like mountain driving and the labored whining of the transmission becomes grating during long drives over mountain highways.
Other minor issues include glitchy sensors which insist that the ABS system is having issues in spite of the fact it has been examined by no less than 3 mechanics who have assured me there is no issue. The same can be said of the check engine light.

Jeep Patriot - transmission issues
I purchased this vehicle from a private owner as a primary means of transportation. I selected this particular vehicle based on availability, the closeness of the seller and the relative age of the vehicle compared to other available vehicles. While this vehicle fulfilled my needs, and was a pleasure to drive, the overall mechanical soundness of the vehicle fell short of my expectations, even for a used vehicle. Overall, I found that transmission issues were a common issue with owners and were reported in high volume across a number of internet discussion boards and review sites. After a few weeks of ownership, I frequently heard whining noises from the transmission under normal operating conditions. During one particular road trip, I had to stop the vehicle due to a transmission overheating warning light. This occurred on a hot day and in heavy traffic. This created a dangerous situation as I had my family in the vehicle and was in heavy traffic when the Jeep automatically reduced speed, causing my to activate my hazard lights and creep through traffic to the nearest exit. These issues ultimately led me selling the vehicle to another private buyer.

Don't Stop Making the Jeep Patriot!
I bought the Jeep Patriot primarily for its AWD and mpg capabilities. It's a manual, and the only gripe I have about it is that at 70k miles a gear fork in the transmission was bent, so it would pop out of first gear on occasion while driving. Because it had a lifetime Powertrain warranty (another great thing when I bought it), the whole transmission was replaced. The engine has otherwise performed flawlessly. The seats are comfortable, and it's fantastic to have seats that fold completely down and evenly flat. The Patriot is extremely practical for those who have a varied lifestyle in regards to sports and everyday life. I'm able to carry a lot of cargo, and the Patriot is appealing to dog owners too because of the available space to accommodate pets. The Patriot has handled well in adverse road conditions and is easy to control. The 8" clearance it has - has been invaluable especially for its small SUV size when compared to many other SUVs in (and outside) of its class. I'm at 180K miles, and it's still going strong.
