A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with the 3.6-liter powertrain, and an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and optional, depending on trim levels. A six-speed manual transmission is available.

All models have a four-wheel drivetrain.

Standard safety features on all trim levels of the 2019 Wrangler Unlimited include roll mitigation, stability control, a backup camera, airbags, and hill-start assist. Some competitors may offer more advanced standard safety features in a new car if they are a buying point.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the Unlimited four-door option is a fun upgraded ride for off-roading adventures. It is pricey with all the extras, so as a cost-saving alternative that still delivers some of the enhanced goodies, the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara trim is what we would go for. Features like remote entry and keyless start come standard. An upgraded Alpine audio system adds to the Sahara's features. We liked the mud tires, sporty black alloy wheels, and a constant four-wheel-drive system that makes the Sahara an attractive offering for daily use and weekend off-roading.

Tech Features: 7/10

The infotainment system is sparse on the lower level trims, but is functional and serves its purpose. Base-level trims on up get a 5-inch Uconnect display, keyless entry, an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port.

A 7-inch and 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with SiriusXM satellite radio, a navigation system, advanced climate control, remote start, power windows, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay is available.

Practicality: 8/10

The Wrangler Unlimited has a bit more cargo capacity than its two-door variant. With the rear seats down, there are 72.4 cubic feet of cargo space available.

Front seats and rear seats are comfortable in the Unlimited with plenty of legroom and headroom. Depending on where you live, and because of how the Wrangler is designed, you may even find you do not use the air conditioning as much.

Towing capacity for the four-door Unlimited variant of the Wrangler is 3500 pounds when properly equipped, making it a fairly heavy-duty contender in the segment.

Styling & Design: 9/10

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a ruggedly handsome contender that holds its reigning title among rivals that have tried to mimic its body style for years.

Different hardtop and soft top options are available. The removable doors add an air of adventure and are an unmistakable feature of the Jeep Wrangler.

The Sport S adds alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and skid plates, and choices of soft tops. Packages like the Sahara Altitude and Sport Altitude add stylings, including a heated steering wheel, a three-piece hardtop, and black leather-trimmed seats for rich interior color.

Driving Experience: 9/10

The overall driving experience varies for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited depending on style. For commuting and more urban environments, the Wrangler is less refined but has capable handling and steering dynamics for daily use. Off-road is where the Wrangler shines, though.

The Wrangler makes use of either its partial or full-time four-wheel drive and has mastered the off-road.

Rivals like the Lincoln Navigator and Dodge Durango may pack more power under the hood, but cannot compare to the Wranglers off-road prowess. However, the Chevrolet ZR2 may offer a sportier all-around experience than the Jeep Wrangler and might be considered.

Fuel Efficiency: 8/10

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited does good for gas mileage with its V6 engine, and it is ahead of some rivals in the segment. Still, fuel economy has never really been a strong point of the Wrangler, and most consumers have come to expect the trade-off of the weak gas mileage for good performance and fun.

Expect 22/24/22 MPG city/hwy/combined with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine option.

The 3.6-liter V6 coupled with the eight-speed automatic drivetrain gets 18/23/20 MPG city/hwy/combined, and the same engine with the six-speed manual transmission gets 17/23/19 MPG city/hwy/combined according to EPA estimates.
