Honolulu, HI Consejos de conducción
We have many (many!) Tourists who visit the Islands and the one thing that seems to be an ongoing problem is that visitors become so enthralled with the scenery they fail to pay attention to where they are going let alone follow the signage. The time of year we have the most accidents is during the winter months because someone will be driving along while trying to take in the scenery and see a whale just off shore and slam on the brakes, only to be rear-ended. The best advice I can offer is to not rush your sightseeing. Spend some time planning your drive by taking advantage of the many free tourist publications readily available at the airport and in the hotels. Include plenty of breaks and take advantage of the many scenic outlooks to stop and take your photos instead of trying to do it from the car. If you're traveling with others arrange to take turns driving so everyone has an opportunity to just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This way no one will become too tired or stressed, and everyone has the opportunity to take in all the island has to offer.

The good news is that all of the car lots are located in the central portion of the island so as far as shopping you don't have to be concerned with doing a lot of driving. The only concern might be that living on an island there will inevitably be a limited choice of available cars. That's not to say you can't special order a car, but you need to keep in mind that the car would have to be shipped over by barge. If you go with one of the car dealers that has lots on the other islands then it may only take a week or so for your car to be shipped over. There is also the option of special ordering a car from the manufacturer through one of the dealers but again it would have to be shipped by barge, and in this case that means from the mainland so delivery time could be weeks if not a month or more. Fortunately shipping a car by barge is not as expensive as you might think, in fact many people who move to the islands have their cars shipped over rather than buying another car here. This also means that if you find just the right car through a business such as AutoList it's definitely possible to have it shipped to the islands.

I live on an Island and one of the things I most love about living here is there are so many places to explore and my car allows me to get to even the most out of the way places. And one of those is Kaupo which is on the eastern side of the island. It's a rugged road along shear cliffs, there are no convenience stops anywhere along the way and only a handful of people live in that area. One time we were able to get permission to enter state land and we drove across a hundred year old lava flow down to the ocean. It was breathtaking, and a little scary a the same time. I have total confidence in my car otherwise it would have been too easy to be concerned about what on earth we'd do if we broke down - after all lava rock often has sharp edges and an easily cut through a tire! Once we reached the bottom we were surprised to discover a small stretch of black sand beach so we ended up spending a couple of hours just relaxing and taking in the spectacular scenery. It as a hot day so it would have been nice to go swimming but the ocean on that side of the island is rough and unpredictable. We took the drive back up the trail slow and realized how different the scenery is looking up the mountain. All in all it was a magical day and one that we hope to repeat again one day soon.

Hana Highway. The island I live on is a little over 500 square miles around so while there are many smaller streets and a couple of feeder highways, there really is only one main highway around the island and that is Hana Highway. The name changes when you head into either the southern or western end of the island but ultimately it's all the same road. Hana Highway runs right along the ocean all around the island, in fact so close to the ocean in some areas then when a major storm comes through portions of the road have been washed out and cars have been carried out to sea. But this is rare and for the most part it's a good road. One of the best things about it is that during the winter months you can see humpback whales from the highway because they come surprisingly close to shore, often times breaching which is an amazing site to see. For those who are willing to explore outside of the typical tourist areas there are also wild orchids, gardenias and mountain apples that grow right along side the road!

That you may experience a lot of homelessness in Hawaii because like I said before, its expensive here to make a living. You may have yourself wondering why there are so much homeless around in the city sleeping on sidewalks, bus stops, parks, parking structures, etc. Homeless even walk to peoples cars while at a red light to ask for spare change or cigarettes. Homelessness here in Hawaii is an epidemic crisis. A lot of the homeless really don't bother others, but you have those few where they make a big scene due to mental illness.

You must do your research!!!! Here in Hawaii, you will especially be surprised to know that buying a new vehicle from the dealer is very expensive compared to the mainland. All because of paying for the shipping to Hawaii for the vehicles to get to the dealers in Hawaii. For example only, you could buy a brand new 2015 Toyota Camry at a dealer in Hawaii for $35,000. Where as in the mainland you could get the same vehicle for the price of $25,000. And in that case you might as well pay for shipping on a brand new car from the dealer that's from the mainland to Hawaii, and that still would be cheaper than buying a car locally in Hawaii.

When I drive in the city it is good to see your environment and how things are constantly changing especially living here in Hawaii. Seeing more tourist makes me feel good in a sense to help save our economy because living in Hawaii is expensive. Driving in the city in Honolulu, where I am born and raised is often great especially during Halloween and Christmas time. And when its Christmas here in Honolulu, City Hall puts up a very big decorated Christmas tree and decorations all around. I love driving through me city. There's even lunch wagons to stop and grab a bite to eat. Driving in the city of Honolulu, Hawaii is just awesome, no questions asked.

Kalakaua Avenue. (Known as Waikiki). They have the whole Waikiki Area (For mostly tourist, but locals also, its like a roadway made for shopping and going to the beach) turned into a busy mad house of people dressed up for Halloween walking down the sidewalk to meet and greet random people and seeing their unique costumes. Its very entertaining, trust me.
