Nothing beats a diesel
With nearly 275,000 miles on my TDI Golf, and with it still hammering down 49+mpg, this car virtually pays for itself. Diesels make more torque and lower on the RPM range, giving the car nice off-the-line acceleration. I will say that my car is equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox and I have heard that the automatics in these cars are not nearly as reliable, not to mention do not get quite as good fuel economy. The overall build quality of the car and the fit and finish leave a lot to be desired. My headliner is falling down and I have noticed many cars with similar issues. The rear left power window quit working and there have been a few other issues, but if you maintain these cars they will practically run forever.
