If you are driving around the city make sure to fill up your gas tank in a well lit area or in the suburbs. It is more expensive in the middle of the city and you are more likely to be asked for money. It is a great town to drive around and see where American Industrialism at it's peak. Be careful in the winter the snow is plowed frequently but it is still icy.
There are an incredible amount of dealerships in the Detroit area and they all want your business. If you do not feel happy with the vehicle or the dealership at the location you are at, tell them, and then go to another location. They are usually clustered together, so you can literally just walk next door. Actually walking next door is the best way to get a salesman to follow you and provide you with a better deal.
So Detroit recently had one of the words winters on record, the snow was forever coming down and at one point we had 3 feet of snow on the roads. It was impossible to drive, businesses were shut down for days, horrible. So one night I was driving home and my street while it had been plowed earlier in the day, it was a nightmare and I swerved on the ice getting my car caught in a snow bank. Thankfully a pizza delivery driver came and helped pull me out, however as my car was getting free he hit a patch of snow and was pushed into the bank. So I got to immediately repay the favor.
Jefferson. Jefferson is a gorgeous street along lake Saint Clair, you can travel from one side of Detroit into the suburbs. Along this street you will find amazing homes, like the Ford estate, or the Art Van home. There is even a rumor that a foreign prince owns one of the homes along this road. During the winter it is lit up with Christmas lights and its an amazing experience to get hot cocoa and just drive up and down. In the city you will see amazing graffiti and a city that is trying to rebuild.

Be careful when driving Downtown because the streets don't always follow a grid pattern, so it's really easy to get turned around. When it doubt, orient yourself to the river, that will help a little. Also, be careful when entering a roundabout--yield to the people already in it!
This is the Motor City so there are lots of choices. There are a lot of dealerships to choose from also going out into the Metro Detroit area (which is vast). Search around. Craigslist is a good choice if you're cash-strapped, if not check out Birmingham where the high end vehicles are, or all the way out on Hall Rd in the Shelby TWP area.
Driving through Detroit, particularly around Midtown and Downtown in the winter when it's snowing but the stuff hasn't piled up yet is so lovely. It's always a little tricky driving around Detroit, but it sparkles at night and especially when you're closer to the Downtown area.
Woodward. It's a wide boulevard that stretches from Detroit to other great cities like Royal Oak and Ferndale. It cuts through a wide roundabout by Comerica Park and there are so many theaters lining it like the Fox and the Filmore. It splits around Campus Martius which has ice skating in the winter and fountains in the summer. It ends at Hart Plaza which is right off the river and there's so much art and lovely old skyscrapers that line it and adjacent streets. The DIA is on it and so is WSU's campus. It's pretty quick when there's no construction.
