Functional & Reliable
This car was functional and reliable. It was also surprisingly fun to drive. Its manual transmission shifted easily and never had any trouble. The mechanical features on the car worked well, although its body did not hold up as well. I liked that it got good gas mileage and was reliable. It was a station wagon, so it was a little lame to drive but very practical. Also, it did not have many perks as far as styling went. It looked like a bubble from the back. But the car reached 200,000 miles and kept going so it's hard to complain about that. The seats were comfortable. The backdoor did not close properly, so the trunk had to be loaded from the backseat. Likewise, the emergency break quit working, even after it was replaced once or twice. Overall, though, the car worked well and held up to a lot of abuse.

Great first car.
The 1997 Ford Escort Wagon is a great first car. I got my hands on one that had been well taken care of, and it was a reliable driver for me for two years, and I was hard on it. It has ample space in the back for carrying cargo. The seats are incredibly comfortable, and there's a lot of foot space in the front and in the back. I personally was really fond of the crank windows.

The Ford Escort - Meh.
I purchased this car used. As a used car it has done what I have asked of it, namely get me from home to work and back again. That is a distance of about 14 miles a day. When I lost the timing belt early on, that was on me. A little research would have shown me they tend to break at around 110,000 miles, right were I purchased the vehicle mileage wise. Since then, it has held up pretty well. A few minor glitches with the brake lights. Overall, considering its age and the high probability that the previous owner drove the Heck out of this car, I must say she's a good old work horse. One thing that I have learned is, whenever possible buy something new or at least newer. If you can't afford one, maybe it's not time to buy. Essentially when purchasing a used car you are in fact buying someone else's problems.
