Watch out for people who run stop signs. This seems to be quite prevalent in residential neighborhoods. Also, be very careful to obey all the traffic laws (no matter how seemingly insignificant) if you are going to be traveling through Hewitt or Woodway (suburbs, the west side of Waco) because the cops there are very picky and don't have much else to do besides pull people over for any little old thing. Also, watch out for a road in south Waco called "the Circle": its just a street that has a point where it's circular and you can get off at a few different points at it, but there have been a lot of accidents there.
I wouldn't use Craigslist in Waco, really. A lot of trashy people and scams seem to be what make up the majority of the Waco section. So my answer would depend on what kind of budget you have to spend on your new car: if you are going to go to a dealership, look them up in the phone book, we have several. There are also some pretty good used car places, but go check them out in person first of all because some of them are owned by, well, drug addicts or ex-cons or otherwise "iffy" types so you have to be careful!
I remember how excited I was the first time I drove anywhere that was actually more than 5 or 10 miles. My parents live in Woodway (a suburb of Waco) and I, by myself, drove all the way out to Gholson Road and back. I was meeting with a friend. For me it was quite a long way and I remember being a little nervous about driving by myself, but at the time I had a system in my car so I just turned the music up and tried to relax and I made it!
Waco Drive. I like to drive down Waco Drive because it's an easy street to figure out if you don't have that much practice at driving (like me), plus people usually don't drive crazy in that area. It's just a very cut-and-dry road that eventually leads to the interstate. It goes through most of Waco, though. I used to go to East Waco all the time and it was the easiest route for me to get there from Woodway to the east side. This was back when I first started driving, so about 16 or 17.

One tip that I would give to other drivers driving around this city is to try and make your trips in the mornings. It seems like most everyone around the area begins driving after lunch for some reason. The roads are much more congested then. If you go wherever you want to go in the mornings you find that there is hardly anyone around and the roads are not congested at all.
The best place to buy a car is to drive along Loop 340. It's known as the auto mile because of the number of car dealerships that have opened along the stretch of the highway. You will find practically any brand and type of car you want all on that same road.
My favorite memory happened one evening coming home from work. Traffic does get bad around the this time of day so I was expecting a long commute. I began my trip home and turned onto my usual route. I was driving at my usual speed also. This route also has a lot of traffic lights along the way as well as congestion. In any case, as I began heading down the road I noticed that I was making all of the lights before they turned yellow! I was able to practically glide down this street without any stops for lights or congestion. It was really a great day to be driving in town.
Franklin Avenue. I like Franklin Avenue because it is very diverse. At one end of the road is the older parts of the town. It has the older businesses and older decor of the times that they were built in. As you continue driving you find yourself in the modern, current part of town. This end has a lot of new business and the decor is also very up to date.
