Great starter car if you want a boat, wayyyyy to wide and long for a car
The 1998 Chevrolet Lumina was an all right started car, but definitely not something I would have wanted long-term. The inside details matched the outside car color exactly, and the interior was all carpet which is a positive over leather interior for summer driving. The car was wider than any other car I have seen with bench seating in the front. It was very comfortable, and roomy! Plenty of space in the trunk and cabin alike. Car drove well for two years with minimal problems, only routine maintenance (except for one incident with a deer, but that was the fault of the driver not the car.) However, there is a HUGE downside to the Lumina though. It is almost a boat. It is incredibly long and really wide. I had a terrible time trying to fit into spots in any parking garage. Also, parallel parking was impossible! I am not the best driver but I couldn't once find a normal street parking spot that I could parallel park into. This obviously made driving in a downtown city area awful, as well as parking.

Old beater runs well enough
This car is old. The paint is chipping. There's some rust, and it was in an accident at some point. It needed some obvious repairs (radiator & thermostat), which are not uncommon in a car with 188,000+ miles on it—and that is a little high for the year. However, it's a cheap beater. After the minimal repairs, the car itself runs great, and the interior is in pretty good shape. It gets dirty easily, which I can't figure out, and the air conditioning/heat won't blow out of the front vents. But hey, the windows work, it gets really good gas mileage, and it doesn't let me down. The cab is large and spacious, as is the trunk. It's comfortable to drive (even for someone who's short, which can be difficult). Beware that GM requires some special (expensive, hard to get) tools and parts for repairs.

Since driving back from FL last spring (see my earlier review) this car still impresses. The mileage has remained much higher than the official ratings. City driving has been over 21 even in harsh conditions. The car drives nicely on snow covered roads. No ABS is a bit of a change since even my '99 Camaro has it. Mechanically, everything has been fine except an occasional extra noise from the starter.
