Other drivers that are new to Lancaster need to realize that a lot of people moved to the city from Los Angeles. So, they are really LA drivers. Make sure if you are not driving at least 5 mph over the speed limit, you will not make friends on the road. The local police love to watch the 14 Highway in city limits.
When you're buying a car in Lancaster, all of the major retailers are right off of the 14 Highway. The 14 Highway is the only major roadway in the city. If you want to buy a car, just drive up and down the 14 Highway, you will not have a difficult time finding a car dealership.
My favorite memory of driving in this city is when I hauled my life away in a U-Haul truck, up North via the 14 Highway! Lancaster is a windy place, and I do not miss it at all! The 14 Highway is relatively traffic free most of the time, so when I did live in the city I didn't have many complaints during my commute to work. Driving to work was pretty stress free on the 14 Highway.
Avenue G 'Musical Road'!. My favorite road to drive in Lancaster is 'musical road'. As far as I know, it is the only road in the United States that plays music when you drive your car over it. It is located on a local road called Avenue G, and if you're not paying attention it can surprise you, maybe even startle you. The music increases or decreases in tempo dependent on the speed you are travelling. It makes the whole car sing, and I love driving with unsuspecting passengers on musical road!

There are many bike lanes, so be wary of sharing the road with bicyclists. Also, as with a lot of southern California cities, there are roads that stop and then pick back up later. So although you may see say 15th street here and you see it some miles away, don't expect that they will connect. Lancaster/Palmdale is great to drive in because the main streets are named by alphabets (Avenue K, Avenue J) and numbers (20th Street, 30th Street) (the alphabet streets all run one way and the numbered streets run "perpendicular" to those) so it makes it pretty easy to navigate around and find your way if you get lost.
I've never purchased or looked for a car here, but I know that there is an Auto Mall in the heart of the city (10th Street W between Avenue K and L)) with several car dealers.
My favorite memory from driving in the city is of the drives my older kids and I sometimes take in the area. We just head out in the car and drive on many of the outlying roads. The roads feel away from things but yet you know you are not too far away from "civilization." There is a lot of beautiful scenery and pockets of beautiful subdivisions everywhere.
Rancho Vista or 50th Street. I can't exactly remember the street name, though we drive it often. It connects with neighboring west Palmdale. Part of it is at a high elevation so when you are driving, you have a beautiful view. It also goes past beautiful subdivisions. It's just a really pretty area to drive through.
